Cruising with Noah

Introduction

Today we are going to be taking a cruise with Noah! You may have heard of him? You aren’t going on this cruise alone, there will be plenty of animals joining you. We are going to see what happens when Noah, his family and all the animals do what God has asked them to and how God brings them hope after everything they once knew has changed.

Lesley and Fudge will be introducing each day.

Story

Nicola is telling our story today. (If you would prefer to read it, you can find it very close to the beginning of the Bible in Genesis 7 and 8)
I wonder how Noah was feeling when he was stood on the ark, surrounded by all of the animals and his family and the rain kept falling?

I wonder if there’s a time when you’ve been looking forward to something, but you weren’t quite sure if it was going to happen?

This story shows us that after disaster can come hope. The Lord provides a rainbow as a lasting sign of His covenant (promise) with his people through all the generations. When we trust God and do what is right he gives us hope and comforts us in our difficulties.

Activity

Noah’s task wasn’t an easy one. Not only did he have to build an actual boat that floated, but he had to make it big enough to fit 2 of every animal on board. We thought it would be a little unfair to challenge you to go out and find 2 of every animal, so instead we want you to have a go at building your very own boat that floats!
Step 1.
Have a look around your house and talk to a grown up—what do you have that you could use? On the right are some of our suggestions, but you could use anything that you and your grown up find.

Step 2.
Make your boat!

Step 3.
Fill your sink, bath or a container with the help of your grown up and put your boat on the water! Does it float?!
Ideas to include:
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Empty butter tub
  • A sponge
  • Paper
  • Corks
  • Plastic Bowls
  • Cut up pop bottles
  • Sticky Tape
  • Glue
  • String

Prayer

Today there are two options. Choose the one you would like or do both.

Prayer 1
You will need your boat from the craft activity and a container of water for it to float on. Place your boat on the water and blow it across to the other side! Read each line of the prayer and then blow your boat across the water again, remembering that God keeps us afloat in the water, just as he did with Noah and his ark!

Thank you God for the rainbow.
Thank you for the hope that it represents.
Thank you for the story of Noah.
We pray that Noah's faith will inspire our own.
Help us to always trust in you,
just like Noah and his family did.
Amen
Prayer 2
You will want to do the 'Venture out' below to gather the objects you need to pray with Abby.

Worship song

St Martin in the Fields, Finham are bringing us our song. Our God is a Great Big God. Join in the actions, sing at the top of your voice or find somewhere cosy to listen to the words.

Passport reflection

Colour in the rainbow stamp. Think about the promise God has made to us and the hope the rainbow reminds us that we have.

Meal chatter

Later on take time to sit together and ask and answer these questions together. Make sure everyone in the family has the opportunity to share:
  • Is it easy to follow what you feel God is asking you to do?
  • Why is the rainbow a good symbol for us now?
  • What is our hope as a family?

Venture out

I wonder how Noah felt when he came off the ark and was able to walk around. Did he enjoy stretching his legs? Did he enjoy seeing plants and hills again?

Today's adventure outside is to go for a walk and find these five things.

Can you find something that reminds you of...
  • The whole world (e.g. something big, something round, something multicoloured)
  • The UK (e.g. leaves from a tree you see often)
  • People you won't see for a while (e.g. something long...a long time)
  • Family/home/safe space (e.g. something hard or strong. Like a rock or stone)
  • People who are having a hard time (e.g. a prickly pine cone, a sad leaf, a flower that has been nibbled by insects)

As you find each thing say a short prayer to God for that topic.

When you get home, you have everything you need for Abby's prayer video.
