Picnicking with Jesus
Introduction
Today we are going to sit down on the grass and listen to Jesus talk! This special talk is known as ‘The Sermon on the Mount’ and includes ‘The Beatitudes’. We will find out what Jesus says is blessed and how we can be different so that our lives are like salt and light.
Story
Our story is being told by All Saints Hallelujah Puppets Team, Allesley. The reading is in Matthew 5:1-16.
I wonder how the crowd felt hearing such a radical message from Jesus?
I wonder if there has been a time when you have done the right thing, even though it was not what your friends wanted to do?
Jesus had a message of love. The Sermon on the Mount explains how God loves us and how we can show His love through our words and actions towards others. The Beatitudes are radical! They provide a list of all the things Jesus says are blessed and they are so often the opposite of what society thinks are the important things. We are called to be different! Like salt and light in the world.

Activity
Jesus told us to be lights in the world, which means to shine out with love. Nicky is showing us how to make lights, so we can put them somewhere to remember to be a light for Jesus.

Today Nicky is showing us how to make spinning emojis to help us pray.
You will need:
You will need:
- 2 circles of card the same size
- A stick/straw/pencil
- Sellotape
- Felt tip
On circle 1 draw two eyes. While you do it think about a sad situation or someone who is sad.
On circle 2 draw a mouth. While you do it think about God's love and how much he loves everyone of us.
Tape the two circles onto either side of the stick (with drawing facing outwards)
As you spin the emoji between your hands it makes a smiley face. As you spin it thank God that he loves us and can come into really sad situations and help people who are sad.

Worship song
St Martin in the Fields, Finham are singing to remind us that 'God loves me'. Join in the actions, sing at the top of your voice or find somewhere cosy to listen to the words.
Passport reflection
Colour in the picnic rug. Think about all the people Jesus said are blessed. How can you be like salt and light in your own life.
Meal chatter
Later on take time to sit together and ask and answer these questions together. Make sure everyone in the family has the opportunity to share:
- What is your favourite ‘Blessed are the…’ from The Beatitudes?
- Why do you like that one?
- Jesus said we should be salt and light in this world- what does He mean?
- How can we be salt and light as a family?
Venture out
Food Venture
Go for a picnic. It might be on a walk or in your garden. While you are eating together tell each other why you love one another.
Mission Venture
On a walk near your house use some chalk to write kind and encouraging messages on the path (please ensure you do this safely, away from dipped curbs etc). How do you think people will feel when they read them?
