Station ten: Jesus is Crucified

Bible reading

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the Jews.

Jesus said a number of things on the cross. Sometimes Churches hold services on Good Friday based around these words. These words "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" are the first ones. The next words are in our next station spoken to the person on a cross beside him. He then speaks to his mother and friend, We will look at these words in station 12. Even when he was dying Jesus thought about other people. Just before he dies, Jesus cries out "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me" and "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" which are the words of Psalm 22 and Psalm 31 which Jesus would have learnt as a child.
